What is Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)
What is Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)?
LNG is a non-toxic liquid which forms when natural gas is cooled to -162ºC (-260ºF). The cooling process shrinks the volume of the gas, making it easier and safer to store and ship. In its liquid state, LNG cannot ignite.
When LNG reaches its destination, it is turned back into a gas at regasification plants. It is then piped to homes, businesses and industries where it is burnt for heat or to generate electricity.
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is natural gas that has been cooled to a liquid state (liquefied), to about -260° Fahrenheit, for shipping and storage. The volume of natural gas in its liquid state is about 600 times smaller than its volume in its gaseous state in a natural gas pipeline. Thisliquefactionprocess, developed in the 19thcentury, makes it possible to transport natural gas to places natural gas pipelines do not reach and to use natural gas as a transportation fuel.
